Can Sporting CP Overturn Deficit Against Imperious Arsenal?

  • Kai Havertz has scored in six of his last eight Champions League appearances, and he has found the net in both of Arsenal's most recent matches against Sporting CP.
  • Sporting CP have won only one of their 14 previous UEFA competition two-legged ties after losing the first leg at home.
  • The Gunners have lost only one of their last 12 UEFA competition matches against Portuguese teams (W6 D5).

After a successful outing in Lisbon, Arsenal FC return to London looking to finish the job against Sporting CP and book their place in the Champions League semifinals. Holding a slender 1-0 lead from the first leg, the Gunners will be confident of getting it done at home.

Sporting, meanwhile, must significantly improve their away performances in the competition if they are to pull off an upset. The second leg is set for Wednesday night (Thursday 1:30 AM IST).

Head-to-Head Record: Arsenal are unbeaten in the rivalry winning and drawing three games.

Arsenal FC Preview

Arsenal FC are under real pressure at the moment, and recent results suggest they’re beginning to feel it. Not long ago, they were dreaming of a quadruple, but within weeks that ambition has been trimmed to just the Champions League and Premier League.

Their title push has also taken a hit, with a 2-1 defeat to AFC Bournemouth narrowing the gap over Manchester City FC to six points, despite Viktor Gyökeres giving them an early lead.

That defeat made it three losses in their last four games, with the only win coming in the first leg against Sporting CP. Even that was far from convincing, with Kai Havertz’s stoppage-time winner rescuing an underwhelming attacking display. With just three goals scored across those four games, their blunt attack is becoming a growing concern for Mikel Arteta heading into an all important game.

Stats that matter

1. Arsenal remain the only side in the UCL this season yet to face a defeat.
2. The Gunners have managed to win all their home matches (five) in the competition, having kept three clean sheets.
3. Gyökeres has scored six goals in his last five matches at club and international level.

Team News

Arsenal were hit by another setback against Sporting, with Martin Ødegaard picking up an injury and missing the weekend game as well. Already stretched by absences for Bukayo Saka, Piero Hincapié and Riccardo Calafiori (doubtful), the Gunners will be hoping their captain is fit in time. There is some encouragement, though, with Eberechi Eze expected to return to the squad after featuring in the league last time out.

Arsenal  Probable XI: Raya (GK); Timber, Mosquera, Saliba, Calafiori/Lewis-Kelly, Zubimendi, Rice, Odegaard, Madueke, Eze, Gyokeres, Trossard.

Sporting CP Preview

A 1-0 deficit may seem manageable, but overturning it away at the Emirates Stadium is a daunting task for Sporting CP. Their poor away record in the competition—just one win in their last six matches, with four defeats—only adds to the challenge.

Still, Sporting can draw belief from having unsettled Arsenal in the first leg, as well as from past comeback-like displays, including their win over PSG (2-1) and the turnaround against Bodo/Glimt (5-3 aggregate). In the end, resilience and belief may be their strongest assets on Wednesday night.

Stats that matter

1. Sporting have managed to win once in their last eight away games in the Champions League.
2. The Lions have conceded over 2.5 goals in their last three away games.
3. Luis Suarez has top scored for Sporting in the competition with five goals.

Team News

There’s a boost for Sporting CP with captain Morten Hjulmand returning from suspension, while Geovany Quenda is also back from injury. However, concerns remain over Ivan Fresneda, who is doubtful after picking up a knock in the weekend fixture.

Sporting CP Probable XI - Silva (GK); Fresneda, Diomande, Inacio, Araujo, Hjulmand, Morita, Catamo, Trincao, Goncalves, Suarez.

Arsenal FC head into the fixture as clear favourites, especially with home advantage at the Emirates Stadium. Interestingly, both previous meetings between the sides at this venue have ended in draws. But this time, even a stalemate would be enough for Arsenal.

For Sporting CP, however, only a win will do, and their underwhelming away record offers little encouragement.

In the meantime, Arsenal are favored by the bookmakers to win with odds of 1.48, while Sporting's chances are at 6.60 and a draw is priced at 4.60.
