​The Panagiotis Dilmperis era at Mohun Bagan started off in an ideal fashion as the Greek, in his debut match as head coach of the club, delivered a win—more importantly, against derby rivals East Bengal. In the process, his side inflicted a first derby defeat on East Bengal’s coach, Antonio Habas. 

Also, if we exclude the cancelled 2024 group match with East Bengal, the latest win means Mohun Bagan have now won six consecutive group matches in the Durand Cup, having won all their games back in 2025.

​As far as their performance was concerned, it wasn't the most convincing performance, but as one would expect from Mohun Bagan, they just find a way to win. The Mariners controlled possession and created the better chances, only to be let down by poor finishing, with Sahal Abdul Samad missing several opportunities before eventually scoring the match-winner. They invited pressure after taking the lead, and it took a string of crucial saves from Vishal Kaith to deny East Bengal an equaliser. It wasn't a flawless display, but it was an effective one.

​In the meantime, Dilmperis fielded an all-Indian XI for the opening game, though we saw Dejan Drazic handed his debut via substitution. Come Tuesday, however, there is a good chance he will be given a start

This time, the goals came from fresh faces, with Rishik Shetty breaking the deadlock before substitute Ashish Chetry headed home Abhiram's cross to seal a 2-0 win. 

While South United created little in the first half, their attacking threat improved significantly after the interval following a series of impactful substitutions, one of which included Chetry himself. 

Meanwhile, Makakmayum Daniyal, last year's hat-trick hero, once again showed flashes of his quality, while goalkeeper Sunil Singh played a crucial role with a string of impressive saves, particularly in the first half, to preserve the clean sheet.

On paper, the Mariners hold a clear edge in both quality and experience, not to mention they are playing at home.
