The 135th edition of the Durand Cup kicks off on July 25 at Kolkata's VYBK Stadium with the season's first Kolkata Derby, as reigning ISL champions East Bengal take on the competition's most successful club, Mohun Bagan. The two heavyweights headline Group A, which also features CISF Protectors and South United FC.

The tournament will be played across six venues in five cities among 24 teams divided into six groups, featuring five teams from the ISL as Sporting Club Delhi make their tournament debut. Meanwhile, Ranchi’s Birsa Munda Stadium is set to host the competition for the first time.

Played in a single round-robin format, the six group winners and the two best second-placed teams will advance to the knockouts, culminating in the final on August 23 in Kolkata.

Head-to-head record: In their 23 Durand Cup encounters, East Bengal hold the upper hand over Mohun Bagan with a 10–8 win-loss record, alongside five draws.

East Bengal Preview

Last year's Durand Cup proved to be the perfect springboard for East Bengal's historic ISL triumph. The Torchbearers topped their group with a perfect record and knocked out Mohun Bagan in the quarter-finals before falling in the semis.

Now, they return as one of the tournament favourites, aiming to end a 21-year wait for the Durand Cup title, having last lifted the trophy in 2004 and finished runners-up in 2023.

There will, however, be a few hurdles to overcome. Antonio Lopez Habas takes charge for his first tournament with East Bengal after replacing Oscar Bruzon, while the departures of ISL Golden Boot winner Youssef Ezzejjari, top assist provider Miguel Figueira, and defender Kevin Sibille leave big shoes to fill.

To strengthen the squad, the club has brought in Effiong Nsungusi and Dani Ramirez in attack, with  Nacho Monsalve adding experience at the back.

Key Players

With uncertainty surrounding the availability of their foreign players, East Bengal's Indian core could take center stage. Bipin Singh, who finished as the club's second-highest assist provider last season, and Edmund Lalrindika, the team's second-highest scorer, will be key in attack, while Anwar Ali's defensive solidity and aerial threat from set-pieces could prove invaluable at both ends of the pitch.

East Bengal Probable starting Lineup

Prabhsukhan Gill (GK);  Boris Singh, Anwar Ali, Nacho Monsalves, Jay Gupta, Jeakson Singh, Dani Ramirez, Naorem Mahesh Singh, Bipin Singh, Nsungusi Effiong, Vishnu PV

ATK Mohun Bagan Preview

Mohun Bagan Super Giant begin their Durand Cup campaign as the competition's record 17-time champions and will be determined to reclaim the trophy they last won in 2023. Beyond silverware, the Mariners also have extra motivation after finishing behind arch-rivals East Bengal in last season's ISL title race.

Meanwhile, they enjoyed a flawless group-stage run in the previous edition before their campaign ended at the hands of East Bengal in the quarter-finals.

The Mariners, however, have undergone significant changes ahead of the new season. Panagiotis Dilmperis has taken over as head coach, while the departures of Jason Cummings and Tom Aldred have been offset by an impressive recruitment drive.

Dejan Dražić and Lallianzuala Chhangte add proven attacking quality, Miguel Figueira brings creativity after crossing over from East Bengal, and defenders Nuno Reis and Zamir Zeljković strengthen the backline, leaving Mohun Bagan looking even stronger than last season.

Key Players

One of Mohun Bagan's biggest issues last season was their heavy reliance on Jamie Maclaren, who finished as the ISL's second-highest scorer with 10 goals. The arrivals of Dejan Dražić, fourth on last season's scoring charts, and Lallianzuala Chhangte should ease that burden by adding more firepower.

With Dražić already integrated into the squad and Miguel Figueira expected to be available for the derby, Bagan's revamped attack will be one to watch.

Mohun Bagan Probable starting Lineup

Vishal Kaith (GK); Mehtab Singh, Alberto Rodríguez, Rahul Bheke, Subhasish Bose, Apuia, Zeljkovic, Miguel Figueira, Chhangte, Liston Colaco, Jamie Maclaren

The last Kolkata Derby ended in a 1-1 draw—a result that proved pivotal in East Bengal's march to their maiden ISL title. The Torchbearers are unbeaten in their last three meetings with Mohun Bagan across all competitions, including a quarter-final victory, while the previous two derbies have both finished level.

With both sides entering the new season under revamped setups, another closely contested draw looks a likely outcome, even if Mohun Bagan appear slightly stronger on paper, provided they have a full-strength squad available.

We predict draw (1-1).
