Iran’s women’s team are going through a difficult phase, dealing with pressure both on and off the pitch. That strain has reflected in their performances, as the Lionesses followed their opening defeat with another heavy loss against the Matildas. 

Much like their first outing where they faced 33 shots, Iran were under relentless pressure again, conceding 30 attempts while seeing just 16% of the ball and managing only a single shot themselves.

On the brighter side, they showed slight improvement in attack, managing three shots with two on target after failing to register a single attempt against Australia. It’s a small positive they will hope to build on heading into their final group match.

Once again, Olivia McDaniel impressed with four saves in the last match. But if the Philippines hope to progress, they must start scoring, with players like Alexa Pino (if she features) and Mallie Ramirez expected to step up in attack.
