South Korea vs Czech Republic Match Prediction & Analysis

One of the talk points of this year's World Cup is the high altitude stadiums of Mexico, something that South Korea and Czechia will have to deal with when they face off on the opening day of the competition at the Estadio Guadalajara, in Zapopan. Known for its scenic beauty, the venue—also known as Estadio Akron—is situated at a height of 5,138 feet and will host four matches.  

​Having set up a training camp in Provo/Salt Lake City (approx. 4,790 feet) before moving to their base camp in Guadalajara, the Asian side will have a distinct advantage over their counterparts. Combined with being the higher-ranked side, the South Koreans will head into the match as favourites. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM IST on June 12.

Key Players 

Although his finishing for Los Angeles FC has not been at its best this season, Son Heung-min’s creative influence remains undimmed, finishing with eight assists in 13 games. That makes him the natural focal point of the side, and he will be keen to improve on a disappointing last World Cup. He can also rely on Lee Kang-in, the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup Golden Ball winner, and the defensive assurance of Bayern Munich centre-back Kim Min-jae.

The Taegeuk Warriors  have been dealt a setback by injuries ahead of the World Cup. Defender Cho Yu-min has been ruled out of the tournament, while midfielder Bae Jun-ho is racing against time to regain full fitness after suffering an ankle injury during a friendly against Trinidad and Tobago.

A 20-year wait is finally over as Czechia return to the World Cup for the first time since 2006. Their qualification journey was anything but straightforward, requiring penalty-shootout victories over Denmark and Ireland in the UEFA playoffs, with goalkeeper Matej Kovar emerging as the hero on both occasions. 

Appointed in December 2025, 74-year-old head coach Miroslav Koubek became the oldest manager at the tournament and quickly stamped his authority by reverting to a back-five system. While the side often edged past lesser opponents by narrow margins and even suffered a shock defeat to the Faroe Islands during qualifying, they showed resilience when it mattered most.

And what stood out from the qualifying campaign was their dependence on set-pieces to find those goals. They generated an xG of 5.6 from dead-ball situations during qualifying and converted those opportunities into 10 goals—the highest tally of any team. However, defensive frailties and a midfield that can struggle to dictate the tempo remain areas of concern against stronger opposition.

Key Players 

Much of the attacking burden falls on Patrik Schick, who has registered 25 goal contributions (22 goals and three assists) across all competitions this season and finished as the nation's top scorer in qualifying with five goals. Aside from Schick, another player to watch is the 25-year-old Lyon midfielder, who enjoyed a strong Ligue 1 season with 14 goal contributions, including 11 goals and three assists.

Unlike South Korea, the Czech Republic have come through their World Cup preparations unscathed. Miroslav Koubek heads into the tournament with a fully fit squad, giving him the luxury of having all his key players available for selection.

A cautious setup could play into Czechia's hands, especially given their threat from set-pieces, where the towering Patrik Schick is a constant danger inside the box. With both sides boasting strengths capable of troubling the other, this contest has all the ingredients of a tightly fought draw.

The bookmakers appear to share a similar view. While the Taegeuk Warriors are slight favourites at odds of 2.70, Czechia are close behind at 2.80, with a draw priced at 3.10.
