Round 1 wraps up with an intriguing clash as Mumbai City FC host Chennaiyin FC on Thursday at 7:30 PM at the Mumbai Football Arena.

After guiding Mumbai City to the title in his first season (2023–24), Petr Kratky now faces real scrutiny. A sixth-place finish last year, capped by a heavy 5–0 playoff defeat to Bengaluru FC, has raised expectations and pressure in equal measure. 

Few understand the stakes better than Kratky himself — he stepped in midway through 2023–24 after Shield-winner Des Buckingham was shown the door, a reminder of how unforgiving the job can be.

The new season has offered mixed signals: a narrow Super Cup semi-final defeat to FC Goa and a shock loss to Rajasthan FC in the group stage. Squad changes add to the uncertainty, with top scorer Nikolaos Karelis and key names like Mehtab Singh and Apuia departing. 

In the meantime, the defence appears unsettled, though newcomer Nuno Reis brings with him a wealth of experience. That said, there’s promise in attack with Jorge Pereyra Díaz returning, while new signing Joni Kauko,  provides the much needed  balance in the  middle of the pitch, required to steady the Islanders early on.

Jorge Pereyra Díaz and Lallianzuala Chhangte will shoulder much of Mumbai City’s attacking burden this season. Díaz returns for a third stint after producing 27 goals and 10 assists in 53 appearances across his previous two spells, and adds further edge following a productive year at Bengaluru. 

Alongside him, Chhangte remains the heartbeat of the side — a source of goals, creativity, and leadership the Islanders will heavily rely on.

Chennaiyin FC begin the new ISL season under Clifford Miranda, who replaced Owen Coyle in October and became the club’s first full-time Indian head coach. His tenure, however, started poorly with a group-stage Super Cup exit after managing just one point and a single goal in the campaign. The ISL now offers Miranda a chance to reset and make a stronger statement.

The good news for Miranda is that the side has done well in the transfer window. Unlike some of the other teams in the competition, Chennaiyin will have their full quota of six foreigners, including retained duo Elsinho and Daniel Chima Chukwu, alongside proven ISL names Alberto Noguera and Mohammed Ali Bemammer, plus Eduardo Kau and Inigo Martin. 

The Indian core remains intact, giving the squad balance on paper — but after last season’s goal drought and another blunt Super Cup showing, much will hinge on Martin delivering up front.

With Alberto Noguera and Mohammed Ali Bemammer, Chennaiyin boast a midfield rich in skills and experience. Bemammer brings steel and leadership, while Noguera arrives on the back of a productive season with five goals and four assists for Bengaluru FC. Together, they could be the engine that drives the Marina Machans this year.

On paper, it’s hard to back Chennaiyin given they’re winless in their last 14 meetings with Mumbai across competitions, including 10 ISL games (L8, D2). But this season feels different — the Marina Machans look sharper and more balanced, while Mumbai are still adjusting after losing key players. 

Even so, with the home crowd behind them, the Islanders might just have enough to squeeze through in what promises to be a far tighter contest than the head-to-head suggests.
