One of the most one-sided ties on paper in the Round of 16 sees former champions France take on Paraguay in Philadelphia. Les Bleus have cruised through the tournament, winning every match so far, including a comfortable Round of 32 victory over Sweden.

When the knockout bracket was revealed, many had pencilled in a blockbuster Germany vs. France clash. Paraguay, however, had other ideas. Furthermore, it was also Germany’s first shoot-out loss in a World Cup. 

Julio Enciso scored Paraguay's first-ever World Cup knockout goal before half-time, only for Germany to equalise shortly after the restart. While Germany grew into the game, Paraguay arguably had the better first half, creating two big chances and limiting the Germans to an xG of just 0.15 before the break. 

Germany then launched wave after wave of attacks, delivering 55 crosses into the box, but Paraguay's stubborn defending and Orlando Gill's six saves—plus two more in the shootout—proved decisive. The victory was only Paraguay's second-ever World Cup knockout win, with the previous one also coming on penalties against Japan in 2010.

Key Players 

Alongside Gill and Enciso, centre-back José Canale was another standout for Paraguay, winning five tackles and making a match-high 15 clearances—more than any other player on the pitch. As Gustavo Alfaro prepares for the next challenge, he will be hoping that the trio can deliver again.

Team News 

Paraguay are still expected to be without centre-back Omar Alderete, who has yet to fully recover from the knee injury he suffered in the final group-stage match. On the brighter side, Diego Gómez returns after serving his one-match suspension and is set to bolster the midfield.

France have just one fitness concern heading into the Round of 16, with Marcus Thuram still doubtful due to injury. Apart from that, Didier Deschamps has a fully fit squad, with no new injury issues or suspensions to contend with.

While Paraguay's best hope is to frustrate France for as long as possible and somehow strike first. Even then, overcoming this free-scoring French side would require a monumental upset.
