Following South Korea’s opener, attention shifts to Sydney on Tuesday where DPR Korea step into action against Uzbekistan. Ranked as the second-highest side in the tournament, the North Koreans are strong favorites to win the match and stake an early claim for top spot in the group.

For Uzbekistan, returning to the competition for the first time since 2003, it’s more than just a fixture — it’s a chance to prove they belong on Asia’s biggest stage.

Head-to-head Record: The two sides have met twice before and on both occasions, DPR Korea walked away victorious.

Korea DPR Preview

Ranked ninth in the world, the Eastern Azaleas head into the AFC Women's Asian Cup as one of the tournament favorites. After a four-year Covid hiatus, they’ve quickly reasserted themselves — winning Asian Games silver in 2023 and narrowly missing out on Olympic qualification to Japan.

Their dominance at youth level has been staggering. North Korea lifted the U-17 Women’s World Cup in 2024 and defended it months later, while also capturing the U-20 Women’s World Cup the same year — three global titles in just over 12 months. Notably, current head coach Ri Song-ho led the U-20 side to that triumph.

What sets them apart is relentless physicality, tireless work rate and technical discipline. With qualifying top scorer Kim Kyong-yong (nine goals) leading the line, supported by Ri Hye-gyong, Myong Yu-jong and Kim Song-gyong, the Azaleas have both pedigree and mental toughness to win the competition for the first time since 2008.

DPR Korea Probable Starting Lineup - Yu Son-gum (GK); Ri Jong-gum, Ri Kum-hyang, Ri Hye-gyong, Song Chun-sim, Myong Yu-jong, Ju Hyo-sim, Hong Song-ok, Ri Hak, Kim Kyong-yon, Choe Il-son.

Uzbekistan Preview

Ranked 49th in the world and led by Kotryna Kulbyte, Uzbekistan return to the Asian Cup after a 23-year wait  and they would be keen to make an instant impact albeit being a tough challenge. Their qualification was anything but straightforward, edging past Nepal in a tense penalty shoot-out after finishing level on points and goal difference.

While the squad may lack global stars, it carries quiet determination. Veteran and all-time leading scorer Lyudmila Karachik brings experience, Diyorakhon Khabibullaeva adds valuable overseas exposure, and Maftuna Shoimova offers attacking threat.

In the meantime, keep an eye on Asalkhon Aminjanova, as the 18-year-old could emerge as Uzbekistan’s breakout name on the big stage having made 10 goals in 10 appearances for her country.

Uzbekistan Probable Starting Lineup - Maftuna Jonimqulova (GK); Shodiya Tosheva, Maftuna Shoyimova, Madina Hikmatova, Leyla Oraniyazova, Umida Zoirova, Feruza Turdiboeva, Asalkhon Aminjonova, Lyudmila Karachik, Diyorakhon Khabibullaeva, Nilufar Kudratova.

DPR Korea hold a clear edge in both ranking and quality, with the depth to sustain relentless pressure throughout the match. Uzbekistan’s best hope may lie in a disciplined low block and playing for moments on the counter. Interestingly, both sides are unbeaten in their last five games but given the gulf in class, DPR Korea are firm favorites to come out on top.
